Sweaters are the best cozy companion, but they require a little extra love to stay looking fresh and fabulous. From washing and drying to folding and storing, this guide has everything you need to know about sweater care.
Tip #1: Don’t Wash Your Sweater Too Often!
Did you know that you don’t need to wash your sweater after every wear? Over washing can weaken fibers and cause pilling, which shortens your sweater’s lifespan. Unless there’s a spill or stain, simply airing out your sweater between wears is usually enough to keep it fresh. To prolong the time between washes wear a lightweight, slim-fitting base layer underneath. Not only is the base layer much easier to wash, it also adds an extra layer of warmth while keeping your sweater safe from sweat and odors.
Tip #2: Love Your Care Label
Your sweater’s care label is like its personal cheat sheet—follow it to keep your cozy fave looking fresh, fabulous, and ready for endless wear! It’s essential to know how your sweater should be washed, dried, and handled to preserve its fabric, shape, and longevity.
Tip #3: Wash Your Sweater the Right Way
Hand washing is the gentlest option for your sweater. Use cold water and a mild detergent to prevent stretching or pilling—Soak is an excellent choice. Simply mix 1 teaspoon of Soak with 1 gallon of cool water, let your sweater soak for 15 minutes, and no rinsing is required. Avoid wringing or harsh rubbing to protect the fibres. When trying a new detergent or product on your sweater, always test it in an inconspicuous spot first to ensure it doesn’t affect the colour or fibres. If your care label says machine wash, place your sweater in a mesh laundry bag, select the gentle cycle, and avoid overloading the washer by keeping it no more than halfway full.
Stains are bound to happen - when they do, gently blot the area with a clean, damp cloth or paper towel. Avoid rubbing, as this can push the stain deeper. If blotting doesn’t help, test an appropriate stain remover on a small, inconspicuous spot. If the stain remover doesn't affect the sweater you can apply a small amount to the stain, and dab with a clean cloth. Resist soaking your sweater in stain remover, as it can often cause damage. Rinse thoroughly with cold water.
Tip #4: Dry Your Sweater Like a Pro
Drying your sweater the right way is key to keeping it soft and in shape. Start by removing excess water—gently press your sweater between two clean towels or roll it up in a towel to squeeze out moisture. Avoid wringing or twisting. Lay it flat on a dry towel or mesh drying rack and reshape it carefully. Let it air dry naturally, away from direct sunlight or heat sources, and flip it occasionally for even drying. Never hang a wet sweater, as it can stretch and distort its shape.
Tip #5: Say Good-bye to Pills and Fix Snags
Pills and snags happen, but with a little care, your sweater can look brand new again! To remove pills, gently glide a sweater comb or fabric shaver over the fabric. No comb? Use a clean, new razor—just be sure to shave only the pills and avoid the fabric. Resist the urge to pull pills with your fingers as this usually damages the fibers.
For snags, avoid pulling the loose thread; instead, use a needle to gently push it inside the sweater or use a small crochet hook to pull the thread from the inside. Gently massage the fibers around the snag to help it relax and allow any pulled fibers to return to the proper place. You can then secure the loose ends in a knot and trim any excess but be careful not to cut the fabric.
Tip #6: Store Your Sweaters the Right Way
Proper storage is crucial for keeping your sweaters in great shape. Always fold your sweaters instead of hanging them to avoid stretching. Lay your sweater flat on a clean surface, smooth out wrinkles, then fold the sleeves across the body. Fold the sweater in half or thirds, depending on your storage space. Keep it in a cool, dry place, away from sunlight. For extra protection, use breathable garment bags or fabric bins. Add cedar or lavender to keep moths at bay and your sweaters smelling fresh. Avoid overcrowding to allow your sweaters to breathe and maintain their shape.
With these simple tips, your sweaters will stay looking fresh, fabulous, and ready to be your cozy companion for many seasons to come!
